Lynne Ryan practices Functional diagnostic nutrition in Calgary. She graduated with honors from The Canadian School for Natural Nutrition (RHN), holds a BSc. in Cellular, Molecular, and Microbial Biology and is Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist (FDN). As a certified personal fitness trainer with both CanFit–Pro and The American Council On Exercise, Lynne has a passion for empowering individuals to live their best life.  She understands the healing power of food and lifestyle, and combines evidence-based knowledge with a holistic approach to identify the underlying causes of dysfunction and coaches her clients towards their personal health goals.

Her interest in nutrition began when she experienced first hand the consequences of not taking care of herself. At 20 years old she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and after the birth of her two daughters, she was diagnosed with clinical depression. She also found herself unhappy and tipping the scales at 200 pounds. She used these challenges as an opportunity to learn what self-care truly is, and realized the powerful role nutrition plays in the healing process.  She believes every individual has incredible potential to reach their health goals and gives her clients customized real life solutions and support.

Lynne has a few areas of expertise. She is a certified Lean Eating Coach with Precision Nutrition and also has specific areas of interest in chronic stress and hormonal health. She founded To Live Right-Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching, and is the in house nutritional consultant for both Healthflow Integrative Health Centre, and Delicate and Raw, a Calgary company specializing in raw, organic, cold pressed juice cleanses and raw vegan superfoods.

Personally, she loves the outdoors, is an exercise fanatic, and has an enduring love for anything chocolate. She is a self-proclaimed cowgirl extraordinaire and gets out to ride as often as possible.

Our Work Together -The 90-Day Protocols

The conventional medical care/ insurance model that society works under today is a “sickness care” model. This type of care is only effective only if you’re really, really sick and sadly, it’s not going to get you where you want to be. This model is based on “symptom relief “and “treatment” of disease. It does not adequately address the underlying causes of malfunction or take into consideration prevention, nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, hidden stressors, or supplements.

The model I work within is a “opt in” self care model. It’s about taking back responsibility for your own health and wellness and committing to the process.  I work, one on one, with clients for 90 days to help identify hidden stressors and underlying causes of concern, to integrate new habits, answer questions, provide follow up, coach and tweak the protocols when needed. At FDN we like to say we “wrap our arms around you” for 90 days.

Why 90 days?

It takes time to integrate change and create new habits into your diet and lifestyle. And, let’s face it; it took a while for you to get where you are and hear what your body has been trying to tell you and it’s going take a little time to build your health, restore your vitality and achieve your goals.

Change can be challenging. Most of us already feel overwhelmed much of the time and the idea of making big changes can be daunting. When we have 3 months together, we can systematically break things down into “ underwhelming” steps so they’re easy to integrate into lifelong habits. Wouldn’t it be great to never have to even think about drinking enough water, eating enough vegetables, getting enough exercise or sleep? Well, when these tasks turn into habits, they’re as unconscious as brushing your teeth and your energy can be focused on going out and making your unique mark in the world.

Are You Ready?

So, my next question to you is this: How ready are you to commit to yourself, and to your health and wellness? If you can answer a 9/10 then please book your free nutritional assessment or send me an email and let’s make 2014 your best year!

How does this process work?

Before our first meeting (or after your free assessment) you will be asked to fill out a number of intake forms as well as a 3 day dietary food log and send them to me via email or fax. Forms can be found in the main menu and are all fillable online

For your convenience, I work in person, skype or by phone.

In our first session, we’ll go through all of your forms, and discuss one on one, your main concerns and obstacles. It’s in this session that the relevant test kits will be explained and dispensed.

When your lab results are in, I’ll do my “detective work” and connect with you to set up your protocol appointment. This appointment is typically 60-90 minutes. Here we go over your lab results and your individual 90-day D.R.E.S.S. for Health Success protocol. DRESS stands for Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress Reduction and Supplementation.

You’ll be given a list of recommended supplements to take for the 90 days, which you can acquire through us, for your convenience, or from your local health store. We make every effort to find balance between efficacy and value when choosing supplements for your protocol. This is a big appointment.

At the end of this session, your follow up appointments will be booked. Most clients find it most helpful to book 4, 30 minute follow ups throughout the 90 days. These appointments can be in person, skype or phone.

 * Here is my suggestion for ultimate success and value:  Invest in yourself. Do all of the suggested testing at once and in the beginning. Knowledge is power. We’ll have more information to make your program more effective and you’ll save both money and time on interpretation fees and lab turnover times*

I hope I’ve explained the process well. Feel free to connect with me if you have any further questions.

What if I’m Already Under Medical Care?

Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN) is a stand-alone, health-building, self-care program which may also be used by people who are under medical care as a holistic grounding program. The holistic approach we use in FDN is complementary to and easily integrated with most medical approaches in use today. Whether FDN is used preventatively or to complement medical, it is certainly in the best interest of the clients who elect to use FDN services. Diagnosing and treating disease is often critical, but there is much more to achieving health and happiness.

It’s time to stop chasing symptoms and start focusing on the root causes that are really holding you back from feeling and looking great!

Common Diagnostic Nutritional Testing Available

1.  Functional Adrenal Stress Profile (205)

Evaluates the impact of chronic stress on endocrine function by measuring bioactive hormones. This is a saliva test that looks at cortisol levels at 4 points through out the day, DHEA, Estradiol, Estriol, Progesterone, Testosterone and Melatonin.

2. Intestinal Permeability- Mucosal Barrier Function (304)

Healthy function of the intestinal barrier is essential to disease prevention and overall optimal health. Being on the front lines in defending the body, the mucosal layer, the surface barrier of the GI tract, is exposed to a multitude of stressors, antigens, pathogens, imbalances of neurotransmitters, toxins and medications. These can weaken and break down the protective barrier. This panel evaluates the integrity of the gut’s mucosal barrier, antigen penetration, dysbiosis, leaky gut, malabsorption, dietary protein sensitivity, secretory IgA production, intestinal permeability, crypt hyperplasia, antibody resistance to; Candida, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and dietary proteins.

3. Metabolic Assessment Profile (101)

The 101 is a test composed of 3 critical markers, measuring dysfunctional protein digestion, oxidative cellular damage and detoxification capacity.

       A. Urinary Indican

A positive indicant indicates poor digestion of dietary protein and/or overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines. Problems with protein digestion can be caused by factors such as helicobacter pylori and parasite infections, dysbiosis, lack of digestive enzymes and liver problems. The inability to digest protein can lead to bowel putrefaction and have adverse affects on glycemic control and hormone balance.

       B. Urinary Lipid Peroxides

High levels of lipid peroxides are associated with a multitude of symptoms, degenerative diseases and premature aging. Lipid peroxides is an index of cellular membrane damage caused by the action of free radicals as a result of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can result from lifestyle problems such as excessive exercise, insufficient sleep and cigarette and alcohol abuse; it also results from exposures to chemicals, heavy metals, radiation and excess stress. The lipid peroxide test indicates the need for antioxidant support and lifestyle change.

       C. Urinary Bile Acid Sulfates

UBAS is a direct measurement of liver function. The enterohepatic circulation regulates bile acid levels and under normal circumstances- given a healthy liver- small amounts leak into the blood stream to be converted to sulfate and excreted in the urine. Compromised liver function leads to a build up of toxic substances that can damage liver cells and lead to increased risk for cancer and a variety of other degenerative diseases. An elevated UBAS level indicates the need for nutritional liver support and removal of toxic exposures.

* A positive result on any of the above markers may be related to a biochemical/metabolic source of chronic stress*

4. Microbiology- Pathogens (401H)

This stool analysis determines the presence of ova and parasites such as protozoa, flatworms, and roundworms; Cryptosporidium parvum, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia lamblia antigens; bacteria, fungi (including yeasts), and occult blood; and Clostridium difficile colitis toxins A and B, as well a H. Pylori. Sensitivity to pathogenic organisms will be reported as necessary. Causes for concern are both an overgrowth of microorganisms that are normally present in the intestines and the presence of microorganisms that are not normally present in the intestines. Either condition signals that major physiological pathways in the intestinal environment are outside homeostatic limits and are chronic stressors.

5. Food Sensitivity testing

These tests are for identifying delayed food sensitivities through dried blood spot or serum. Food sensitivities can play a role in many common health conditions. Digestive problems, headaches, joint and muscle pain and fatigue are all symptoms, which can be caused by our immune system’s reaction to foods, additives or other substances in our diet.  Any food or food additive can be reactive, even foods considered healthy. In addition, reactions can be delayed and /or dose dependent. This means we may not feel the effects of a reaction until for hours or days after we’ve eaten a reactive food or additive or enough of it. For all of these reasons, dealing with food sensitivities on your own can be very difficult. Testing is a great way to remove the guesswork.

* These are just a sample of the diagnostic tools that we employ to identify underlying causes and contributing factors. There are many more tests available to help with individual client concerns and issues*
